I was out raking weeds in the old horse corral when I accidentally scared away a mother mallard. I looked and found her nest with 10 eggs. I decided to save the raking until after her eggs hatched so that she could sit on them in peace and hide in the weeds. We checked on the eggs every once in a while and they finally hatched on Memorial Day. Tony was out in his shed when he heard the mother duck freaking out. He went to check it out and the eggs were hatching but the neighbor's cat came and bit the head off of the first one and scared the mother away. We took the rest of the eggs into the shed and put a lamp over them to keep them warm so they would hatch. We went on our Rhino ride and when we came back, 7 of the eggs had hatched. The other 2 never did hatch so we just got rid of them. Luckily our neighbor knew a little about ducklings so he was able to tell us what to do to take care of them. But, being as inexperienced as we are, 4 have since died and there are now 3 remaining. 2 of them get bigger every day and the other one I don't think grows at all. The drink tons of water and eat ground up grains and corn. I wish I could leave them outside to eat bugs but I am afraid the cats will get them.
