Queen Maeve
August 17, 2012
On top of Knocknarea overlooking Sligo town is an ancient cairn. Legend says that this is where the mythical Iron Age Queen Maeve is buried. Archeologists say that this cairn may really date back to 3000 b.c. There are a few interesting legends that go along with Queen Maeve. One of them is that she was killed by a piece of cheese that her nephew flung from his sling shot.
This is me acting like I don't know how to go through this gate.
This is Tony showing me how easy it is.
I read on the internet that this was a 45 minute hike. I didn't realize that they meant just to the top.
It is supposed to be bad luck to remove a rock from the cairn and good luck to add one. This is me adding a rock to the top. It felt kind of wrong standing on top of somebody's grave.
This picture puts the size of the cairn into perspective.
I love the stone walls all over Ireland. I just had to sit on one for a picture.
View from the top.
